STORIES / CARE & STORAGE

Care for a plush collection

Check a plush before cleaning, record wear you want to monitor, and rotate pieces without crowding the shelf.

Read the care label first

Check the sewn-in label for the individual piece. Two plush with a similar shape may have different trim, stuffing, or care instructions. Save a photo of the label with your record so you can find it when the plush is back in storage.

If the label is missing, pause before trying water or a cleaner. Pay particular attention to glued details, electronics, and delicate trim. Make a note of the mark or loose part while you decide how to handle it.

Make a quick condition check

Set the plush on a clean surface and look at the seams, ears, and any attached accessories. Use a straight-on photo for the overall shape and a close-up for a pulled thread or a rubbed patch. Write down the location so you can compare the same spot later.

Check the base and back as well as the face. Those areas are easy to overlook when a piece sits in the same place for a long time.

Keep display and storage separate

Give a sitting plush room around the ears and leave enough depth for a reclining one. For storage, choose a clean, dry spot with room for the piece to keep its shape. Remove any temporary clips used for the display and record where you put them.

Rotate a small group at a time

Take a reference photo before you clear a shelf. Bring out a small group and compare its condition with the last record. If a piece is leaning on its neighbor, move the pair apart or leave one for the next rotation.
