The pin that stayed off the bag

In this imagined story, Mina trades a familiar pin for a blue raindrop and finds a place for the memory beside it.

Two pins on the table

The rain had moved the neighborhood swap into the hall. Umbrellas dripped into a bucket by the door, and each time someone arrived, the draft lifted the corners of the little paper signs. Mina used a spare pin backing to hold down the sign she’d written for her table.

On a folded cloth lay a pin of a yellow character asleep among flowers. Mina had another like it on her board at home. Across the table, Eli set down a blue enamel raindrop and turned it until the edge caught the light.

“You picked a good day to bring that one,” Mina said. Eli looked at the bucket by the door and laughed. They agreed on the trade, then kept talking while the room emptied. Before he left, Eli drew an umbrella on a scrap from the back of his sign and slid it across the table.

The empty spot on the bag

At home, Mina held the raindrop against the front of her bag. It fit the space she’d been saving between two pins. She reached for the backing, then noticed the scrap of paper beside her keys. If she put the pin on the bag, she’d have to decide where to keep the drawing.

She took both to her board instead. The raindrop went below a row of larger pins. She tucked the umbrella drawing into the corner of the frame, close enough that its pencil handle almost touched the drop.

A label for a rainy afternoon

A few weeks later, a friend asked why a drawing was tucked between the pins. Mina remembered the bucket first, then the draft that kept lifting the signs. It took her a moment to remember which pin she had traded away.

She cut a narrow slip of paper and wrote Eli’s name and the date. The next morning she picked up her bag and ran a thumb over the empty spot. When she came home, she put the bag down beneath the board and saw the umbrella still holding its place.
